Vanguard
The National and International news media has and will continue to cover the tariffs and trade wars that have rocked the globe. If you have prioritized your mental and emotional health and avoided discussing tariffs and trade wars, (A) good for you, and (B) here is a quick run-down.
The US is placing tariffs on numerous countries and copious goods imported into the US. In return, those countries are placing tariffs on US goods that are typically exported out of the US. Hence, the trade war. More of that information can be found with a simple, but scary, Google search. The trade war means that additional costs, from the tariffs, are often passed down to the consumer of said goods.
You may wonder, but that could never hit Bentley’s campus. Oh, you would be wrong. The Bentley Vanguard, your student newspaper, received the following email from our publishers alerting us of costs that we did not budget for, nor anticipated, related to the tariffs placed on Canada, where our newsprint comes from. Farmers, steel, and alcohol producers…we aren’t so different after all.
The Vanguard could face increased costs from our publishers, the largest line item in our budget. Yes, what is happening across the globe, including the trade war, can impact Bentley students and student organizations on our nifty Waltham campus.
News outlets across the political spectrum have argued that due to tariffs and the trade wars, stock markets are plummeting, corporate confidence is lackluster, consumers are scared of higher prices and economists warn that the actions might push the US into recession. Yelp. And Bentley University is not immune.
