When I discovered that libraries offering video games were the exception rather than the rule, I was genuinely surprised. In high school, my local library’s gaming section was always my first stop, and I’d bypass all the novels just to check out the latest games. As college students, we’re all aware of how expensive books can be, but the same goes for videogames! I really love the addition of this service and can confidently say it has only fueled my love for gaming.
Bentley goes one step further than my local public library in that they offer loaner consoles alongside the games. Although I own a Switch, I truly appreciate the impact of this system. College life can be overwhelming, and having a space to unwind and connect with others through gaming is invaluable. Without these gaming resources, it would be tough to balance the cost of school supplies with the expense of recreational gaming.
I’ve heard talk of expanding the library’s gaming collection if there’s enough student interest. So, I encourage everyone to explore this unique addition to our library, even if gaming isn’t typically your thing. Trying something new doesn’t have to be intimidating, and it’s a great way to take a break from the grind of schoolwork. Trust me—spending hours on assignments or back-to-back group project calls can make anyone feel like a zombie! (Perhaps I’m giving myself some advice here…)
Looking ahead, I hope to see an even broader selection of games at our library, and I think other colleges would do well to follow Bentley’s lead. It’s a simple yet effective way to unwind, stay social, and manage stress, even during winter months or if your friends are far away.
If I bought every new game I liked, I’d probably need a second student loan! I’m sure I’m not alone when I say that free game access provides a financially responsible and safe way to have fun.
